BACKGROUND: The Seaside Center provides temporary housing, monitoring and transitional services for 50 adult male and female confined misdemeanor offenders, pre-trial/pre-sentenced community placement, jail diversion, convicted felons and misdemeanant furlough cases.

SCOPE OF WORK: Residents receive help transitioning from a life of crime to one of responsibility and productivity. This process includes teaching life skills and providing job readiness training. Newly placed residents are subject to a highly structured environment. As treatment and rehabilitation goals are achieved, offenders earn the privilege of decreased structure. Security measures include 24-hour custodial supervision, closed circuit surveillance cameras and frequent census checks. The Center has close working relationships with Native Corporations, the City of Nome, U.S. National Park Service, and other state agencies. More than 90% of our offenders come from the Norton Sound region, Kotzebue region extending to Point Hope, and St. Lawrence Island.

FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The Seaside Center is situated in Nome is approximately 150 air miles from the Siberian Peninsula of Russia.

SERVICES: Substance Abuse Counseling Culturally Relevant Education (Inupiat and Yupik Language Classes, Traditional Healing Practices, Artistic Expression, and Cultural Traditions) Employment Assistance (including Resume Writing, Job Search Strategies, Job Application Assistance and Interview Techniques) Life Skills (including Anger/Stress Management, Parenting, Suicide Prevention, Sexual Abuse/Assault Intervention, personal Hygiene, Budgeting, Banking, and Securing Housing) Vocational Training is available as classes become available
