BACKGROUND: Adelanto Detention Facility was purchased by The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) in June 2010 from the City of Adelanto. The Facility was originally developed in 1991 to house a population of adult males sentenced by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. On May 27, 2011, GEO entered into contract with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), through an intergovernmental service agreement with the City of Adelanto, to house federal immigration detainees. The initial intake of detainees began in August 2011. In July 2015, The GEO Group will add an 640-bed expansion which will increase the Facility’s total capacity to 1,940 beds.
SCOPE OF WORK: GEO’s operation of this facility will enable ICE to end the long standing practice of transferring immigration detainees to other offices due to a lack of detention space in the area. Medical care, food service, laundry and general living conditions for offenders are provided in accordance with standards required ICE. Detainees have access to secure visitation and a commissary, library and legal services.
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The 107,578 sq. ft. campus is strategically located within 130 linear miles of the San Diego Federal Courthouse and within 60 linear miles of the Los Angeles Federal Courthouse, and within close proximity to the other six federal courthouses located in the Southern and Central Districts of California. The ICE air operations site in Victorville, California, is within 6 driving miles. The facility is centrally located for GEO Transport services in the states of California, Arizona and Nevada.
Under contract with ICE, the Adelanto Detention Facility was developed in two phases. GEO renovated and retrofitted the existing facility, and the initial intake of detainees began in August 2011. The design of Adelanto features dormitories for general population housing. The facility has an expanded medical area, library, kitchen & dining areas, visitation area and other support areas.
GEO completed an expansion of Adelanto Detention Facility in August 2012, increasing the campus’ capacity by 704 beds. The design of Adelanto features secure cell beds for general population housing. Also included is a medical area, library, kitchen & dining areas, multipurpose room, visitation area and other support areas.
ACCREDITATION: The facility achieved initial accreditation through the American Correctional Association in 2014 with a score of 100%.
