BACKGROUND: In February 2008, the D. Ray James Detention Facility (DRJDF) began accepting federal and county prisoners pursuant to intergovernmental agreements. The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) provides safe, secure, and humane care for three hundred and forty (340) male detainees in a dorm and two-person cells. The current detention facility delivers all levels of services providing an environment for pretrial prisoners working their way through the judicial system.
SCOPE OF WORK: GEO assumed operations during the acquisition of Cornell Companies in August 2010. The facility provides safe, secure, and humane care, for the US Marshals Service and Charlton County prisoners. Services provided include security, medical care, food service, counseling, and some educational programs. GEO provides transportation for the US Marshals to meet their operational and air missions and the Justices Prisoner and Alien Transportation System (JPATS).
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The D. Ray James Detention Facility is comprised of a 51,548 square foot housing unit and a 5,598 square foot administration building, on 12.8 acres located in Folkston, Georgia. The facility was originally built in 1998, as a state correctional facility for the Georgia Department of Corrections. The facility’s support services areas were expanded in 2013 to include a kitchen, laundry, expanded medical and additional administration areas. The detention facility is immediately adjacent to the neighboring D. Ray James Correctional Facility however maintains its own secure parameter and independent operations.
ACCREDITATION: The facility received its initial accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA) in January 2013. The facility is also accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC), receiving accreditation 2008. The Joint Commission (also known as JCAHO) accredited the facility in November 2012.
