Cassandra Newkirk joined GEO Care, Inc. in 2005. Dr. Newkirk brings over 27 years of experience in forensic psychiatry and correctional mental health services administration to GEO and serves as the Vice President of Correctional Mental Health Services and Chief Medical Officer for GEO Care, Inc.  Immediately prior to joining GEO Care, Dr. Newkirk was the Mental Health Director at Rikers Island Penitentiary in New York City.  

 

Dr. Newkirk received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She completed her residency in Psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine and has Board Certifications in General and Forensic Psychiatry.  She earned her Masters in Business Administration in Health Care Management from Regis University.  She practiced general and forensic psychiatry in Atlanta, Georgia as well as having faculty appointments at Emory University and Morehouse Schools of Medicine.  She also served as Deputy Commissioner and Chief Psychiatrist for the Georgia Department of Corrections for several years.  

 

Dr. Newkirk has served in several elected positions in national psychiatric as well as correctional organizations during her career including the Presidency of the American Correctional Health Services Associations and the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association.  She has also served on several committees of the American Psychiatric Association focusing on public sector psychiatry, especially dealing with correctional issues.
