Internship Programs
GEO Care offers Pre-doctoral Psychology Internship Program at three facilities: South Florida State Hospital (SFSH), in Pembroke Pines, Florida; South Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (SFETC) in Florida City, Florida; and Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center (TCFTC) in Indiantown, Florida.
South Florida State Hospital
South Florida State Hospital, a 350 bed state psychiatric hospital, has an internship program that is accredited, on probation, by the American Psychological Association (APA), and is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). The accreditation status of this program can be obtained from the APA Office of Program Consultation & Accreditation, 750 First Street NE, Washington, DC, 20002-4242, (202) 336-5979, and at its website www.apa.org/ed/accreditation. The internship training program provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in assessment and intervention with a diverse patient population. Goals include increasing awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural, social and psychological needs of special populations and learning to adapt traditional modalities while receiving direct supervision and formal didactic training. The facility provides treatment using a multidisciplinary psychiatric rehabilitation model based on a philosophy of “Role Recovery”. The intern functions broadly as a clinical practitioner, however, experience with specialized behavior plans, cognitive assessment, and forensic assessment and treatment is also provided. In addition, interns will participate in each of the three following rotations: (1) Forensic (2) Cognitive Assessment and (3) Individualized Behavior Planning.

South Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center
South Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center’s internship program is a member of the Association of Psychology Pre-doctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). SFETC is a 238-bed forensic psychiatric facility that evaluates and treats men and women who have been adjudicated by the court as Incompetent to Proceed to Trial (ITP) or were found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI). Interns are involved in a variety of assessment activities which include completing intake assessments, functional assessments, suicide assessments, risk assessments and functional analyses of behavior. They also serve as a member of a treatment team, administer clinical and forensic psychological tests (including those to assess for malingering) and develop and implement behavioral programs. Interns are trained to conduct both psychotherapeutic and competency groups as well as individual competency sessions; they also carry a small caseload of individual psychotherapy patients. Interns may assist their supervising psychologist in conducting competency evaluations and preparing other types of status report.

Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center
Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center’s internship program is a member of the Association of Psychology Pre-doctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). TCFTC is 198-bed forensic evaluation and treatment facility for men who have been adjudicated by the court as Incompetent to Proceed to Trial (ITP) or Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI). Interns are responsible for completing Psychological Assessment Reports, Functional Assessments of Behavior, Risk Assessments, and Functional Assessment Rating Scales (FARS). They also participate in conducting clinical and forensic psychological tests including those used to assess for malingering. Furthermore, interns are trained to conduct both psychotherapeutic and competency groups (including a Mock Court) as well as individual competency sessions. Interns may assist their supervising psychologist in assessing competency, as well as preparing other types of status reports to the court.
