Over the past decade, GEO has awarded over 13,000 high school equivalency diplomas – equipping individuals with valuable skills to join the workforce post-release and to continue their lives as contributing members of society.
In 2017 alone, GEO awarded approximately 2,600 high school equivalency diplomas, marking a 41 percent increase over 2016, and just over 7,800 vocational certificates.
GEO recognizes that education is a major factor in breaking the cycle of recidivism. Taking an academic approach to in-prison education, GEO has developed The GEO Learning Model. The GEO Learning Model is designed around specific requirements of adult learners and encourages learning from mistakes. It includes technology-driven learning labs equipped with SMART boards, individualized education plans, and problem-based and collaborative learning opportunities. The GEO Learning Model was developed in 2015 and since then has been implemented at GEO’s U.S. Corrections facilities nationwide.
